Explore the jungle of Puerto Maldonado and know its large fauna and flora. Get into the rainforest by walking through trails or navigating the Madre de Dios River. Discover the fascinating biodiversity of the Tambopata National Reserve and observe all the beauty that the Peruvian Amazon offers, from above with a network of suspension bridges, or from the water sailing in wooden canoes typical of the communities of the area.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Canopy Interpretation Center: This centre has a network of seven suspension bridges 45 meters’ high that will allow you to see nature from another perspective.

Tambopata National Reserve: With a range of one and a half million hectares, the reserve has been the protagonist of numerous television documentaries due to its biodiversity.

Canoeing: A canoe ride through the cochas, small water reservoirs, while doing a native fishing activity

Day 1: ARRIVAL PUERTO MALDONADO (25min by boat)

After landing in Puerto Maldonado (recommended to arrive before 11:00 am), start your journey through the Peruvian Amazon navigating the Madre de Dios River until you reach the hotel (approximately 25 minutes) and enjoy the beautiful landscape that surrounds you. Have your first taste of the jungle flavours during the buffet lunch, with dishes prepared using local ingredients. In the afternoon, take a walk through the Concepcion trails getting into the jungle and learning about the forests, their components, uses and importance for the planet. At dusk, get into a motorized canoe and sail down the river on a trip in search of the species that come out at night and see their behaviour, as well as delight the view with the impressive starry sky of the jungle. In the evening, savour dinner at the lodge.

Overnight in Puerto Maldonado.

Day 2: PUERTO MALDONADO

After a tasty breakfast at the lodge, get ready for a walk along the Tambopata National Reserve to Lake Sandoval, and you will understand why Madre de Dios is known as the biodiversity capital of Peru. Tour the lake aboard a traditional canoe in what appears to be a mirror of water and search for species such as the giant otter, the blue and yellow macaw, the howler monkey, the black alligator and the paiche, one of the fish with scales of the world's largest freshwater. Enjoy lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, discover the heights of the jungle in the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway & Anaconda Walk experience, where you will learn about the projects of ITA- Inkaterra Association, an NGO in charge of environmental conservation. You will walk along suspension bridges that connect the canopies of trees at 28 meters above the ground in search of toucans, hummingbirds, trogons, monkeys and sloths. At night, get ready for a nocturnal adventure through the Amazon and watch how the animals appear at night, with behaviours different from the day time fauna. Close your eyes and open your ears to hear the unique sounds that the jungle gives you. Then, return to the hotel for dinner and rest.

Overnight in Puerto Maldonado.

Day 3: PUERTO MALDONADO

Have breakfast and start your day with an excursion to the clay licks on the property to learn about its animal activity and look for traces of species such as añujes and sajinos on its walls. Continue with the morning activities in the native farm, where you will learn the cultivation techniques of the local populations and taste many of the products of the area. Enjoy lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, a canoe ride awaits you in the hotel's lake or lagoon. Complete the experience with a native fishing activity using species capture and release techniques, as well as having the opportunity to observe other animals such as shanshos and anochalas. On the way to the lodge, you will make a quick stop for the site of the steamboat Fitzcarraldo sink to learn its history and how it inspired Werner Herzog to record the movie of the same name in 1982. At night you have the option to repeat the ride to the clay licks, now to see the nocturnal animals. Savour dinner at the lodge.

Overnight in Puerto Maldonado.

Day 4: DEPARTURE PUERTO MALDONADO (25min by boat)

Recharge your batteries with one last breakfast at the lodge and travel by canoe back to Puerto Maldonado. You will be transferred to the airport to board your flight (recommended to depart after 1:30 pm).

The weather is tropical, with an average temperature of 32°C (89° F), ranging from 25°C (77° F) to 42°C (107° F). The hotter season usually ranges from December to March and comes with frequent afternoon rainfall. Between June and September, you may need some warmer clothing, since occasional “friajes” or Patagonia Cold Fronts can reduce the temperature to 10°C (50°F). Cool comfortable cotton clothes are required to counter the heat while sweaters and jackets may be handy at night. See Equipment and Luggage. Visitors must anticipate the extreme heat and humidity of the jungle by finding out the exact weather condition at the time of travel in order to be ready with clothing and accessories.
